Auto Paint Canada – FAQs
What is a Tri-Coat Color?
Tri-coat paints are colors that require an additional application step for a richer, more complex finish. This method is often used for pearl whites and certain red shades. When ordering a tri-coat paint, your kit will include two paint bottles: one for the base color and another for the mid-coat color. The application process involves applying the base color first, allowing it to dry, and then applying the mid-coat. After this, the usual steps follow—apply a clear coat for protection and polish with a compound to achieve a smooth finish.
I found my color on your website, but the color Swatch you display looks different than my car. Is this the correct color?
The color swatches displayed online are close approximations, but they may not perfectly match your car’s actual color. This is due to the limitations of converting paint colors to RGB for display on computer screens. Wherever possible, we try to replicate the paint’s finish (metallic, pearl, etc.) in the swatch, but screens can’t fully capture these details. For the most accurate match, always rely on the paint code found on the label of your vehicle.
The color code on my vehicle says LRC LKH, but on your website, all I can find is code LKH/1AB/2136. Is this the right color to choose?
Yes, some colors in our database are used across different models and can be referenced by more than one code. As long as your vehicle's code (LKH) is one of the codes displayed on the website (LKH/1AB/2136), you have the right color. The different codes simply reference the same color across various manufacturers or models.
What is Touch-Up Paint for Cars?
Touch-up paint is a specially formulated automotive paint designed to repair scratches, chips, and minor imperfections on your vehicle. Available in formats such as paint pens, aerosol cans, and bottles, it makes minor repairs easy. Whether you're fixing small chips or larger scratches, our custom-mixed touch-up paint ensures an exact color match for your car or truck every time.
How Do You Use Touch-Up Paint on a Car?
The method you use to apply touch-up paint depends on the size and type of the damage. For small chips or scratches, touch-up paint pens offer precision. For larger areas or a full panel, aerosol spray cans or ready-to-spray pints, quarts, and gallons are more suitable. Need help? Watch our How-To Videos for detailed application instructions.
Can I Get Spray Paint to Match My Car?
Yes! We provide custom-matched spray paint in professional-grade aerosol cans for smooth application. For larger jobs, we offer ready-to-spray paint in pints, quarts, and gallons that are perfect for use with a spray gun.
Can Car Paint Be Matched Exactly?
While we use advanced color-matching technology to provide the closest possible match for your vehicle, it's important to note that all touch-up paint is designed as a blendable match rather than a guaranteed exact match. Factors such as age, sun exposure, weather conditions, and fading over time can affect your vehicle’s existing paint, making it impossible to create a perfect match in some cases. However, our custom-mixed paint will blend seamlessly with your current finish when applied correctly, delivering professional results.
How Do I Find My Car's Paint Code?
Your vehicle’s paint code is typically located inside the driver's door, under the hood, or in the owner’s manual. Use our Paint Code Locator Tool to find out where to check based on your vehicle's make and model.
Do Touch-Up Pens Work on Cars?
Yes! Our automotive touch-up paint pens are ideal for small chips and scratches. They're easy to use, delivering precise application and ensuring your touch-up job looks professional.

How Much Does It Cost to Touch Up Car Paint?
The cost of touch-up paint varies depending on whether you do it yourself or visit a body shop. A DIY kit from Auto Paint Canada can save you hundreds, while a professional repair can range from $300 to over $1,000. Our custom-matched touch-up kits offer an affordable solution for professional-quality results at a fraction of the price.
What Primer Should I Use Before Painting?
For the best results, using a primer that matches the type of surface you're painting is essential. We offer primers specifically formulated for metal, plastic, and other materials. Primer helps the paint bond better and ensures smooth coverage, especially on bare metal or heavily damaged areas.
How Long Does Touch-Up Paint Take to Dry?
Drying time depends on the product and environmental conditions, but typically:
• Touch-up pens: 20-30 minutes between coats.
• Aerosol sprays: 10-15 minutes between coats, with full drying taking 24 hours. After applying the paint, it's essential to let it fully cure for 24-48 hours before washing or waxing the area.
Do I Need to Apply a Clear Coat?
Yes, applying a clear coat is essential for a professional finish. It protects the paint, adds shine, and helps it blend seamlessly with the original finish. Auto Paint Canada offers high-quality clear coats that are easy to apply and provide long-lasting protection.
How Should I Store Leftover Touch-Up Paint?
To extend the life of your leftover paint, ensure the lid is tightly sealed and store it in a cool, dry place. For best results, use any leftover paint within 12-18 months.
Can I Repair Rust Spots with Touch-Up Paint?
Yes, but it's crucial to treat the rust first. Clean the rusted area, apply a rust converter or rust inhibitor, and then use a primer before applying the touch-up paint. This process helps prevent further rusting and ensures a smooth, durable finish.
How Do I Apply Touch-Up Paint for Best Results?
• Prep the surface: Clean the area thoroughly and sand lightly to remove loose paint and rust.
• Apply primer: If necessary, apply primer and let it dry.
• Apply paint: Use thin, even coats of touch-up paint, allowing proper drying time between coats.
• Apply clear coat: Finish with a clear coat to protect the paint and achieve a glossy finish. Check out our detailed How-To Videos for step-by-step instructions.
Will Touch-Up Paint Fade Over Time?
Auto Paint Canada’s solvent-based paints are formulated for long-lasting durability. While all paint may fade slightly with prolonged exposure to sunlight and harsh conditions, our products are designed to maintain color vibrancy and resist UV damage.
